Bose Companion 5 Software
This is driving me nuts. I've had these wonderful speakers since last December and whenever I reboot, my PowerMac G5 doesn't recognize the USB speakers and I have to unplug the power from them, plug it back in, and the computer instantly sees them and all is good for awhile. I'm a relatively new Mac user (1.5 yrs) and the reason I'm not a good troubleshooter is because I rarely have any trouble! I believe I have followed the setup correctly, but something's not right.
Anyone else ever have this problem? Can you point me in the right direction to get this resolved?
Thanks! / ~Sam

Are you using the USB connection? I do not get any sound out of my Companion 5 using the USB connection a lot of the time. It stopped working consistently a while ago. Maybe when 10.6.5 came out. It makes an occasional popping noise but now cuts out a lot of times. If I unplug and replug the power to the speakers it starts back up. I'm seeing 'The selected device has no output controls.' now though. I think maybe the Bose driver is having issues. To get around these problems for now I also have a stereo cable from my MacPro to the puck. If I get tired of crawling under my desk or tired of the popping noise I just switch to line out. Doesn't sound quite as good but keeps me from getting frustrated some times. I think Bose needs to put some engineering time into figuring out what is going on here. I've ordered some other speakers and if they work out better I'll sell my Bose.
I faced this problem today. I hadn't used my Bose Companion 5 speaker for a while (few months). They used to work fine with OS X Lion. I have the latest Lion version 10.7.5. I couldn't even see Bose USB Audio in either System Preferences - Sound or Audio Midi Setup. Strangely my Macbook Pro doesn't even recognizes the speaker. Hello, I have a Bose Companion 5 speaker system. It sounds good so far. But there is a note at the systems preferences: no output control is available for this device. If not, select 'Bose USB Audio' and click 'Set Default' Your CompanionĀ® 5 multimedia speaker system is now ready to use. Mac OSĀ® X audio setup IMPORTANT.
